Hustlers open summer baseball season

The Hustlers, an age 17-and-under squad, then faced a tough Walla Walla squad June 9 and they lost a home doubleheader, 15-7 and 9-6.

The Hustlers then traveled to Pendleton to compete in a three-day tournament June 13-15. They had a rough start on June 13 when they lost 8-1 to the Carson Blue Jays 18U squad. The Hustlers outhit the Blue Jays, 6-5, but they were unable to overcome six fielding errors, which contributed to the loss.

Following the loss to the Blue Jays, the Hustlers played the second game of the day and lost, 12-2, in five innings to the Legacy Legends.

On June 14, the Hustlers played much better, getting two wins. In their first game, the Hustlers won, 11-8, over the 18U Vallivue Titans. The Hustlers outhit the Titans, 10-5, and were led offensively by incoming The Dalles High senior Evan Ortega (3-for-4, four RBI) and Tysen Baker (2-for-4, RBI), a Hood River Valley High incoming sophomore.

In the second game on Saturday, the Hustlers played outstanding defense in allowing a season low three runs in a 5-3 win over the Cole Valley Christian High Chargers. The Hustlers scored five runs over the first four innings in building a 5-0 advantage. They held the Chargers scoreless in every inning except for the seventh, as they allowed three runs for the final margin.

The Hustlers continue their schedule with a 5 p.m. doubleheader June 18 at McDaniel High School in Portland. The Hustlers then return home for a 4 p.m. doubleheader versus Philomath on June 20.
