HOOD RIVER — The Hood River Valley girls lacrosse team has hit their stride.
They have been winners in five straight games and continue to prove their resilience in the fourth quarter. On April 4, they won a competitive match against Westview, 12-11, and followed that with two more wins against Sunset High (2-4 overall record) on April 9 and St. Mary’s Academy (1-5) on April 11.
The Eagles traveled to Sunset High on April 9 and won handily, 17-9, with four players scoring three or more goals. Freshman Josie Faaborg scored a game-high five goals. Junior Izzy McCormack scored four, and Lyla Mall and Zella Berens both scored three. Renie Spence and Sophia Ransom added one score each.
Two days later, HRV returned to Portland for a match against one-win St. Mary’s Academy. Despite their record, St. Mary’s had played the third most difficult schedule, according to Oregon Girls High School Lacrosse rankings. Hood River, who is ranked No. 11, won its second one-goal game, 10-9.
Senior Sky Vaivoda Kerr, who returned to the squad this week, scored three goals against St. Mary’s, but it was Faaborg again leading the Eagles’ offense with four goals on four shots. McCormack added two goals and Mall added another. Senior Malina Bukovansky dished two assists and freshman Savina Davis added one.
The Eagles play three games between April 15 and 21: home vs. Ida B. Wells (1-4) on April 15, home again vs. Cleveland (2-1) on April 18 and again vs. Ida B. Wells on April 21 in Portland.
