Hood River Valley hosted a final tune-up meet April 30 heading into this week’s 2024 Northwest Oregon Conference’s track and field district championships.
The NWOC meet is May 8 and 10 at Centennial High School in Gresham. The top two placers in each individual and relay event automatically qualify for the May 17-18 Class 5A state championship at Hayward Field in Eugene. There are five additional wild card spots for the next fastest times/marks from 5A district meet finals statewide.
Parkrose, La Salle Prep, and 1A Horizon Christian competed in last week’s meet at HRV. Hood River had 10 varsity event individual winners and Coach Brandon Bertram’s team recorded 37 personal bests, including 24 by the boys team.
Three of the wins came in boys field events. Sophomore Caden Tubbs won the triple jump at 37 feet, 4.5 inches; sophomore Fernando Solberg won the pole vault at a personal-best height of 13 feet, 3 inches; and junior Levi Grimsley won the shot put at 41-9. On the track, juniors Logan King and Kai Wagner battled in the 800 meters, finishing 1-2 with each running a lifetime best (King, 2:04.51 and Wagner, 2:05.35).
Other notable marks included the 12-6 pole vault from senior Micah Castro, who also ran a PR 12-second 100 meters. Senior Chaz Rockett was second in the 100 at 11.84 and doubled in the 200 at 24.18. Senior Jackson Bullock ran a personal-best 52.47, 400 meters and doubled back later in the 200 with a 24.74 effort. Freshman Wyeth Droege raced to a PR 17.62 in the 110 hurdles.
Hood River’s girls team was led by senior Simone Tillman, who won the 200 (26.12), 400 (60.13), and ran legs on the Eagles’ first-place 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Joining her on the long relay were Sadie Baumann, Sutton LeFevre, and Abby Kelly. Sydney Barrs, Kelly, and LeFevre ran the other legs on the 4x100.
Kelly cleared 4-10 to win the high jump; while Barrs leapt 15-6 to win the long jump. Also in the field events, junior Sylvaine Farr cleared 9-6 to win the pole vault; and junior Alex Bronson set a PR in the triple jump at 33-8.
On the track, distance runner Syl Perrin was second in both the 1500 (PR 5:08.21) and the 800 (2:37.45). Baumann raced to a 2:36.16 in the two-lap race. Katie Godkin and Hazel Haspela also ran distance doubles for HRV; Godkin went 5:31.9 (PR) in the 1500 and 2:45.08 in the 800, while Haspela ran 5:31.95 and 2:45.04.
The Eagles, coached by Brandon Bertram, figure to have a number of athletes advance to the 5A state meet. Tillman is ranked No. 1 in the NWOC in the 200 and 400, and third in the 100 hurdles. She also has anchored HRV’s second-ranked 4x400 relay. Parr is ranked third in league in the pole vault, and Bronson is No. 4 in the triple jump with her mark this past week.
On the boys side, Solberg and Castro are ranked 1-2 in the pole vault; Bullock is ranked No. 1 in the 800; and Jack Miller is ranked first in the javelin.
Wilsonville is favored to win the girls district championship, based on times and marks this season, and Canby and La Salle Prep are among the front-runners for the boys crown.
