HOOD RIVER — The Hood River Valley High (HRV) Eagles’ quartet of seniors Judah Caudill, Kendall Sales, Jena Hager and Poppy Mooney capped successful seasons – and their prep tennis careers - by competing in the OSAA Class 5A state tournament May 23-24.
Caudill won a May 23 boys singles first round match 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 over Rikuya Kasai of Springfield. Caudill advanced to the quarterfinals where he lost 6-0, 6-0 to Caldera High senior Aiden Cruz at the West Hills Racquet and Fitness Club in Portland.
Sales lost a May 23 girls first-round singles match 6-3, 6-2 to Ridgeview High senior Darrian Streater in Portland. Sales then moved into the consolation bracket, and she won a quarterfinal match, 9-7, over freshman Luci Reid of La Salle High. Sales followed with a May 24 semifinal consolation round win, 8-3, over Trina Dinh of Parkrose High at Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton. Sales concluded the tournament by advancing to the consolation semis where she lost 6-1, 6-0 to Audrey Gardner of Silverton.
The HRV girls doubles team of Hager and Mooney lost a close May 23 first-round match, 7-6 (4), 6-4 to South Albany’s senior duo of Lilyanah Poris and Danielle Quiroga in Portland. In the consolation round, Hager and Mooney rebounded with a quarterfinal match win, 8-2, over Wilsonville’s Julia Tatsumi and Teagan Hamilton. Hager and Mooney then concluded the tournament with an 8-4 semifinal loss to Redmond’s Bliss Stelzer and Brooklyn Lindsey in Beaverton.
