HOOD RIVER — Hood River Valley’s girls wrestling team was among 35 teams who competed in the War of the Roses tournament Dec. 14 at Westview High in Beaverton.
The Eagles finished 28th this past weekend in the meet which featured mostly Class 6A high schools (and similar-sized Washington schools). Kelso, Washington, won the team title; Hood River scored 39 points.
The Eagles were led by Natalia Solorio Campos, who placed sixth at 235 pounds. Solorio Campos finished with a 4-3 record at the tourney. She won her opening match but then lost by fall in the second round. Solorio Campos won three matches by fall before losing her final two matches.
Two other Eagle wrestlers won matches: Kyra Mitchell was 2-2 at 140 pounds and Xiomara Gordian Gomez won two of four matches at 155. Gordian Gomez won her first two matches before losing in the quarterfinals to Isabel Herring of Portland’s Cleveland. Herring was the 5A/6A state champion at 170 pounds this past season.
Ayleen Marquez at 115 and Christeen DeHart also at 115 each won a match in their weight bracket. Also competing for HRV were Madison Rae at 105; Melissa Jara Vela at 110; Isabel Taylor at 110; Karely Bolanos Romero at 120; and Charley Beam at 130.
