HOOD RIVER — Hood River Valley (HRV) girls lacrosse have won three of their first four games, including a thriller against Westview High on April 4 in Hood River. On Friday, Renie Spence scored a season-high four goals, including the go-ahead score in the fourth quarter to complete the comeback. Westview led by as many as three goals in the second half before Hood River outscored the Cougars 4-1 in the final quarter to win 12-11.
“I just told the girls I was so proud of them, because every player did their job, and that’s what makes lacrosse fun and beautiful,” said HRV head coach Eliza Eaton. Eaton has coached Hood River the past three seasons.
Versus Westview, the Eagles were challenged on the defensive end by Westview forward Avery Nelson, who has scored 18 goals in three games for the Cougars this season. Nelson would score a goal with ten minutes remaining in regulation and have an opportunity to tie the game with one minute remaining, but Westview would be unable to get a shot off. Fourth quarter goals from Lyla Mall and Spence solidified their lead and propelled HRV to their third win a row. Faaborg scored three goals, added an assist and Malina Bukovansky added two goals and an assist.
Jennica Rigert patrolled the center of the defense and played a large part in limiting Nelson’s impact on the score. Eaton recognized Bukovansky’s offense and Rigert’s defense.
“Yeah, those two were clutch,” she said. Hood River goalkeeper Claire Kealy made a season-high eight saves.
In the lead up to Friday’s home game, the Eagles hosted Beaverton (1-4 overall) and won, 10-8. Bukovansky scored a game-high five goals and recorded two assists. Faaborg added three goals and Kealy made five saves against the Beavers.
Hood River Valley will travel to Sunset High (1-2) on April 9 and St. Mary’s Academy (0-3) on April 11.
