HOOD RIVER — Hood River Valley’s girls wrestling team finished fifth and qualified four athletes for this week’s Class 6A/5A state tournament at Portland’s Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum.
Natalia Solorio Campos (34-8 this season) placed second at 190 pounds and Kyra Mitchell (34-12) was second at 130 to lead the Eagles. Also qualifying for state were third-place finisher Xiomara Gordian Gomez (145 pounds) and Valeria Solorio, who was fourth at 155 pounds.
Oregon’s four statewide 6A/5A special districts qualified four wrestlers apiece in each of the 14 weight divisions. The state meet begins Feb. 28 with the girls 6A/5A first round matches starting at 8 a.m. The tourney resumes March 1 at 9:30 a.m.
Hood River scored 127.5 team points to finish fifth at the Special District 2 tourney Feb. 21-22 at Sandy High School.
Mitchell, who scored 24 team points, won her first three matches by fall and then faced unbeaten Zorina Johnson of Ida B. Wells in the championship.
The Portland wrestler, who won the 125-pound state title in 2024, won by a 17-2 technical fall. Solorio won two matches by fall before losing in the title match to 2024 third-place state finisher McKenzie Mills of Portland’s David Douglas. The HRV wrestler scored 22 team points.
Gordian Gomez (37-13) added 20 team points with three wins in four wrestled matches. Her lone loss came in the semifinal to Maya Kruger of Parkrose High. Gordian Gomez rebounded from the loss to pin Megan Salama of McDaniel High in the third-place match.
Solorio Campos (29-15) scored 21 team points and had a busy day at 155 pounds. She won her first match but lost in the quarterfinals to the eventual third-place finisher and 2024 state meet wrestler, Esperanza Walsh of Portland’s Grant High. Solorio Campos won three matches by fall to earn a rematch against Walsh in the third-place match. Walsh won a second time, but Solorio Campos earned a spot in state with her major decision win over Jordan Dunkerson of Centennial in the fourth-place match.
Ayleen Marquez (30-14) placed fifth at 105 pounds. Marquez won her first match by fall before losing in the quarterfinals to Niazeal Orduna Torres of Portland’s Grant High. Marquez won three of four consolation matches and scored 17 team points.
Also placing fifth was Madison Rae (11-20) at 110 pounds (scoring 12.5 team points). Rae won three of six matches at district.
At 125 pounds, Charley Beam won two of her four matches and scored four team points for the Eagles. Beam’s two losses were to district placers. Christeen DeHart (16-20) won one of three matches at 110, as did Karely Bolanos Romero (12-11) at 115. Also competing at district for HRV was Melissa Jara Vela at 105 pounds.
