HOOD RIVER — The Hood River Valley boys basketball team celebrated their seniors before a home matchup versus the Parkrose Broncos on Feb. 28. The Eagles (6-9 Northwest Oregon Conference, 11-12 overall) were then eliminated from playoff contention following their 53-58 loss to the Broncos (7-8 NWOC, 10-13 overall). Hood River entered Friday’s contest with back-to-back wins over Centennial (65-61 on Feb. 21) and Putnam (49-48 on Feb. 25), and Parkrose had lost four in a row before defeating the Eagles.
Friday’s game marked the final home game for seniors Davis Kerr, Davis Parr, Matthew Fauth and Zak Poole, who were recognized prior to tipoff. The teams traded baskets, and Parkrose’s biggest first half lead was 13-9 late in the first quarter. The Eagles would take a one-point lead, 18-17, from a Parr 3-pointer off an assist from Zak — who finished with a team-high six assists. Parkrose senior Dominic Todd scored a hook shot over Fauth and went into halftime ahead 33-30. Todd’s basket with 49 seconds left in the second quarter would be the last time the Broncos score until 7:06 in the fourth.
The Eagles went on an 11-0 scoring run in the third and held Parkrose scoreless in the quarter. Parkrose seemed to flip the switch and they scored 25 points in the final frame. They shot 72% from the field and were a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line.
The loss officially eliminated Hood River from playoff contention, yet one game remained on their schedule — an away game versus Milwaukie High Mustangs on Monday (result came after print deadline).
Hood River sophomore JJ Poole led the Eagles in scoring with 20 points on 5-for-13 shooting and 7-for-9 from the free throw line. He added seven rebonds and two steals. Fauth scored eight points and grabbed nine rebounds — including five offensive rebounds.
