HOOD RIVER — Hood River Valley’s boys golf team played in a fun, scramble format event April 4 at Crooked River Ranch Golf Club in Central Oregon.
The Eagles won the boys competition of the Madras High White Buffalo Scramble at Crooked River Ranch Golf Club. Dave Shephard and John Olsen won a one-hole playoff to earn low-score honors with their 8-under 63. They had a four-hole stretch on the front nine of eagle, par, eagle, birdie.
Teammates Aksel Betz and Davis Kerr took third place and HRV’s Aiden Willis and Wyatt Behn were fourth. HRV Coach Erin Mason called the No. 3 team’s effort, “absolute icing on the cake.” He said the goal was for that team to keep below 4-over par, but instead they went 5-under (66).
“In the end, this crew makes my job easy,” Mason said. “They don’t need to be coached too hard during events, they are all seasoned golfers and know what they need to do to be successful. This is hands down the best team we have assembled in my eight years as coach.”
Northwest Oregon Conference matches started April 7 at Willamette Valley Country Club in Canby. The Eagles will compete April 14 in the La Salle Invitational Tournament at Persimmon Golf Course in Gresham.
HRV also competed March 31 in the Grant Generals Invitational at Columbia Edgewater in Portland. The Class 5A Eagles joined 14 Class 6A teams – as well as some smaller schools - at the event. Hood River overcame rough weather - periods of downpours, hail — to finish fourth overall at 338.
Freshmen Sheppard and Betz each shot 81 to tie for 15th. Olsen finished with an 84 (after a back nine 39), and Kerr added a 93.
