HOOD RIVER — Horizon Christian School (HCS) of Hood River won the 2025 District 3-1A boys track and field championship May 22-23 at the Deschutes River Athletic Complex in Maupin.
The Hawks scored points in 14 of 15 individual events and won both relays to score 140 points overall. Echo High won the girls meet, while Trout Lake was second.
Horizon won four individual titles. Senior Caleb Caldwell swept the longer distance races, running the 3000 meters in a personal record 9 minutes, 28.51 seconds and the 1500 meters in a PR 4:22.55. Junior Landon Whitaker won the long jump at a near PR of 18 feet, 11.5 inches (5.78 meters) and was third in the 110 hurdles. Teammate Charlie Haynie won the 110s in 16.28 and was second in the 300 hurdles with a personal best of 42.45.
Whitaker and Haynie also ran legs on both Horizon relays. They were joined on the 4x100 by Tyler Abbott and Judah Garrett, and on the 4x400 by Abbott and Caldwell. Horizon also had three other individual OSAA Class 1A state meet qualifiers (top two or those who earned wild card berths) in freshman Joshua Carley (third, 3000), Brayden Strong (third, 1500), and Abbott (third, 400).
The Hawk boys also received individual team points from Garrett (100, 200, javelin), Abbott (400, high jump), Carley (1500), Strong (800), Josiah Roberts (shot put), Aaron Johnson (high jump, pole vault), Xander Ives (pole vault), and Joseph Dutton (triple jump and long jump).
Host South Wasco County was third in the boys team title chase behind Condon. The Redsides were led by the state-qualifying performances of Storm McCoy, who won the javelin; Jason Hull, who was third in the 300 hurdles and fourth in the 110s — both in PRs; and Coy Shirley, who was second in the javelin. The state meet is May 29-30 at historic Hayward Field in Eugene.
Dufur High was fourth and had state-meet qualifiers in Zeb Stelzer in the 3000 (PR 9:44.11); Chase Richards in the high jump; and the Rangers’ 4x100 relay of Stelzer, Bryson Cates, Noah Coleman, and Chase Richards.
The Trout Lake boys were fifth and led by two champions - thrower Jayden Kusky, and pole vaulter Sawyer Dean – and runner-up triple jumper Gael Fuentes. Kusky won the shot put at 49-3 (15.01 meters); Dean won the pole vault at 15-0.25 (4.58 meters); and Fuentes bounded 38-10 (11.84 meters) in the triple jump.
Sherman County was led by state meet qualifiers Michael Blagg, who had personal bests in the long jump at 18-8.75 (5.71 meters) and 200 (third, 23.87), and Renan Christiansen, who was second in the shot put at 48-4.25 (14.74 meters).
Lyle-Wishram was led by state-meet qualifiers Ezekiel Marble, who was second in the 110 hurdles and fourth in the 300 hurdles (PR 43.07), and Jack Thiemann, who won the triple jump at 39-4.5 (12.0 meters). Glenwood’s Shane Spino placed in three events (100, 200, 400) and ran a leg on the team’s 4x400 relay (fifth place).
Trout Lake’s girls team scored 89 points for its runner-up finish and was led by double district champion Melody Stock, who mostly ran alone to easily win the 3000 (10:41.81) and 1500 (5:00.0). Senior Violette Anderson placed in three events and qualified for state as well. She was third in the high jump (PR 4-10.25, 1.48 meters), second in the shot put (season-best 34-7.75, 10.56 meters), and third in the 100 hurdles.
Cora Sharp was second in the long jump at a season-best 15-10.5 (4.84 meters), third in the 100 (state wild card berth), and also ran legs on the Mustangs’ state qualifying relays. She was joined on the runner-up 4x100 team by Ellie Rubesh, Lupe Medina, and Riley Rickman, and on the district champion 4x400 by Stock, Medina, and Rickman. Medina earned an individual berth at state with her second place in the 300 hurdles (season-best 51.36).
South Wasco County was third as a team and had three district champions in Macy Bell, Jayda Iverson, and Bailey Udey. Bell cleared 5-0.5 in the high jump (1.54 meters), Iverson won the 800 (2:32.09) and also qualified for state with her runner-up 400 finish, and Udey won the triple jump with a personal best of 34-7.25 (10.55 meters). She also qualified for state in the long jump with her fourth-place mark.
Horizon girls were fifth and led by the meet’s top female individual point scorer, senior Hannah Adams. She won the 100 hurdles (16.22), was second in the high jump at 4-10.25 (1.48 meters) and second in the pole vault for 26 team points. Senior teammate Bella Sperry cleared a lifetime best 4-9 (1.45 meters) to also earn a trip to the state meet.
Sherman was led by state-meet qualifiers Arwen Dorzab (sixth in a deep high jump field); senior Taylor Payne (second 1500); and T’Sharra Lanthorn (second 800, in a PR 2:33.05). Dufur had a double event champion in freshman Ellie Brock, who won the 400 at 1:02.59 and then came back later in the meet to win the 200 in a personal best of 26.82 (a two-second school record).
