Gorge golfers compete at state competitions around Oregon
- By Mike Weber For Columbia Gorge News
A five member group of local Gorge athletes participated in the 2024 OSAA Golf State Championships Monday and they'll conclude the season on Day 2 of the tournament Tuesday at several different venues in Oregon. Â
One of the best performance's was by Dufur High Ranger sophomore Tygh Timinsky, who shot an 18-hole round of 85 on Day 1 of the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A girls tourney at Tokatee Golf Club in McKenzie. Timinsky is on target to either match her performance from 2023, when she was sixth, or possibly even finish higher if she shoots a lower score today.
Â
The Dalles High Riverhawks senior Katelyn Vassar also competed with Timinsky in the tourney and she shot a 97 Monday and is in 22nd place out of a field of 65 golfers. Vassar, who qualified for state all four years, will conclude her The Dalles High golf career in Tuesday's second round.
In the Class 5A girls tournament, Hood River Valley Eagle junior Kristin Fox shot 48 on the front nine and 53 on the back nine for a first round score of 101. Fox, who is playing at state for the first time ever, was in 33rd place out of 57 golfers after Monday's first round at Trysting Tree Golf Course in Corvallis.
Â
The HRV duo of juniors John Olsen and Davis Kerr, guided by Coach Erin Mason, played in the 5A boys tourney Monday at Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks. Olsen, who is competing in the event for the first time, started out on the front nine with a 41, followed by a 43 for an 18-hole score of 84 and 28th place out of 62 golfers. Kerr, who is competing at state for a third straight year, shot indentical scores of 46 on both the front nine and back nine for a first round score of 92 and a 52nd place position.
"Davis had three triple bogeys and two double bogeys, so it was not one of his best showings on Monday," said Mason. "He was over thinking the game a little bit and being careful cost him for sure. I'm sure he'll bounce back in Tuesday's second round."Â
