HOOD RIVER — Hood River Valley’s (HRV) girls swimming team finished third in the 400 yard freestyle relay at last weekend’s Class 5A state meet to cap the Eagles’ 2024-25 season. The HRV team of sophomore Nyxey Heredia, senior Maya Arndt, junior Sophia Helleberg, and senior Sophie Cross swam the event in 3 minutes, 54.62 seconds to finish behind Bend and Canby. The meet was held Feb. 21-22 at Tualatin Hills Aquatic Center in Beaverton.
Heredia, sophomore Ava Giordano, junior Delaney Hackett and Cross teamed up to finish sixth in the 200 yard freestyle relay final on Feb. 22 in 1:47.61. The Eagles’ 200 yard medley relay team of Helleberg, senior Kylin Elliott, Hackett, and Giordano was ninth in 2:04.01 in the Feb. 21 preliminaries.
In individual races, Cross and Arndt finished ninth and tenth in the prelims in the 200 yard freestyle (2:09.56 and 2:10.36). Cross was eighth in the 100 yard freestyle prelims in 57.78. Elliott was ninth in the 100 yard breaststroke prelims in 1:15.91.
Cross capped her Eagle swim career with six state relay qualifications and four individual qualifying spots.
Hood River Valley’s girls finished ninth with 10 points and the Eagle boys were 12th with two points. Bend won the girls title and Crescent Valley of Corvallis the boys.
The HRV boys were paced by junior Felipe Mendez, who swam on two relay teams and in two individual races. Mendez was fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke (two team points) in a personal best 1:02.29 in the Feb. 22 final. Mendez swam 1:03.27 in the preliminaries to qualify for the final.
Mendez was 11th in the 200 yard individual medley in a personal best 2:11.29. He swam on HRV’s ninth place 200 yard medley relay (1:51.19) along with junior Francisco Solberg, freshman Liam McGeeney, and senior Max Webster. The Hood River 200 yard freestyle relay was 11th in the prelims in 1:40.61. The team included Solberg, freshman Kane Wagner, Mendez, and Webster. HRV’s 400 freestyle relay of McGeeney, freshman Logan Griffith, junior Charlie Marcotte, and Wagner was 11th in the prelims in 3:50.38.
