HOOD RIVER — Hood River Valley (HRV) took care of two familiar baseball foes mid last week before Portland’s Lincoln High walked away with a win by week’s end on April 4.
The 2-1 record left Coach Max Reitz’s team at 4-4 heading into the final run of nonleague games this week.
THE DALLES — The Dalles High Riverhawks (2-6) baseball team is in the midst of an early seas…
HRV wasn’t fooling around to start the week, posting an 11-5 win over Gorge neighbor The Dalles Riverhawks on April 1 (see related story). A day later, former Intermountain Conference foe Pendleton — which, like The Dalles, now plays at the 4A level — lost to the host Class 5A Eagles, 6-0. Class 6A Lincoln took advantage of 14 base-on-balls to humble HRV, 22-9, on April 4.
The Cardinals (2-6) outhit HRV, 9-7, but a two-hit advantage usually doesn’t equate to a 13-run advantage — unless there are some free passes. Lincoln scored six times in the first inning and its eight-run fifth put things out of reach. Addison Postlewait and Trevor Jacobs each had two hits for the Eagles. One of Postlewait’s was a home run, which was matched by teammate Chaz Valentine’s round tripper.
The game ball against Pendleton (3-6) was pitcher Bodie Stuben’s after his three-hit, one walk, five strikeout performance over seven innings. Offensively, Davis Parr had two hits, Davin Snyder scored twice, and Stuben and freshman Tyson Harjo both doubled. Snyder is doing his job of getting on base for the Eagles from the lead-off spot, having scored twice in each of the Eagles’ games — and avoiding any punchouts.
Postlewait earned the pitching win against The Dalles (2-6), scattering seven hits and striking out seven over five frames. Maverick Hockett added two hitless innings of relief. Postlewait, Kingston McAdam and Stuben solidified their 2-3-4 spots in the batting order with two hits apiece. Hood River took the lead for good in the fifth inning with its six-run outburst.
Hood River has some work to do in the field before its next game April 8 at Corvallis (4-3). The six errors against The Dalles likely didn’t endear the players with Coach Reitz, who won’t be happy until things are cleared up a bit in the field (as well as his pitching staff limiting the base-on-balls). Northwest Conference play begins April 15, so time is somewhat of the essence.
