HOOD RIVER -- It’s nonleague schedule complete, the Hood River Valley baseball team now enters Northwest Oregon Conference play this week with two games against Parkrose and another against Rex Putnam.
The Eagles finished their nonleague slate at 5-5 after splitting games last week; HRV won, 9-0, at Corvallis on April 9, and lost 12-8 against visiting Ida B. Wells on April 11.
Coach Max Reitz said: “We are looking forward to the start of league play. It’s a nice transition into a “new” season within a season. We certainly felt like we left some wins out there in our pre-conference schedule but also feel like we played some challenging teams. Hopefully that will help us as we enter NWOC league play.”
HRV will need to be sharp in conference games. “With three teams in the top five and four in the top 10 in the state, league play will present challenges every day and we welcome those as a team,” the coach explained.
The Eagles were in good form against Corvallis. “It was another good win against a quality opponent on the road,” Reitz said.
Starting pitcher Bodie Stuben threw six scoreless innings, allowing four hits, zero walks and struck out five Spartan batters. Trevor Jacobs threw a hitless seventh in relief.
Offensively the Eagles pounded 11 hits. “Our lineup is deep right now, and Stuben was tough,” Reitz said.
Trevor Jacobs went 3-for-4 and knocked in two runs, and teammate Nick Tuttle matched Jacobs’ RBI total behind two hits of his own.
A seven-run sixth inning gave Stuben more than enough run support. Stuben aided his cause with two hits.
There was plenty of run support for HRV in its loss against Ida B Wells, but the visitors also were on the offensive and outhit the Eagles 15-11. Hood River led 4-3 after three innings, but a 2-3-4 run fourth, fifth and sixth inning charge gave Ida B Wells a 12-5 cushion.
HRV was led at the plate by the two-hit performances from Davin Snyder, Stuben, Tuttle, and Davis Parr.
