HOOD RIVER — The Hood River Valley (HRV) Eagles softball team opened their season with a low-scoring win, 3-2, over Class 6A Sandy Pioneers on Wednesday. March 19 in Hood River. The Eagles are led by third-year head coach Madelynn Vallejo who coached HRV to a 14-13 overall record and a sixth place finish in the Northwest Oregon Conference (NWOC) last season. Sandy finished third in the Mt. Hood Conference last year.
On Wednesday, the Eagles and Pioneers met in Hood River for each team’s season opening game. Hood River senior Grace Rowan started on the mound and pitched seven innings.
Offensively, Hood River struck first in the bottom of the first inning off a double from sophomore Bella Belcher. Sophomore catcher Isa Rivera scored from first base to give HRV an early lead. Belcher went 2-for-2 at the plate. Senior Grace Rowan, who was the starting pitcher, threw seven complete innings and only allowed three hits. She struck out nine Sandy batters.
In November, Rowan announced her commitment to Division 1 University of Massachusetts-Lowell in Haverhill, Massachusetts.
Rivera, senior Sarah Mason, sophomore Gracyn Hanshaw and freshman Honey Wampler Bryan all recorded hits.
Hood River will head to Madras High and participate in the Lady Buff Classic. They matched up with McKay (5A, Mid-Willamette) and Ridgeview (5A, Intermountain) on Monday (results after print deadline). A double-header on Tuesday, March 25 had them scheduled to play Crook County (4A, Tri-Valley) and La Pine (3A, Mountain Valley).
The Ealges will open their 16-game NWOC schedule against Parkrose High on April 16.
