HOOD RIVER — Hood River Valley’s girls wrestling team was eighth at the 15-team Jaguar Girls Invite on Dec. 7 at Century High School in Hillsboro.
The Eagles had four placers, led by Natalia Solorio, and scored 94.5 team points. Solorio won three of four matches all by fall at 235 pounds before she lost in the championship to Bianca Miranda by fall. Miranda was the 5A/6A champion at 235 at the 2024 state tourney.
Eagles coach Jessica Lister said it was pleasant to see the young wrestlers step up.
“They all wrestled with their heart today and never gave up,” Lister said. “Freshman Ayleen Marquez came out of nowhere with some big and exciting wins and first year wrestler Karely Bolanos Romero shocked our coaching staff today with how well she wrestled.”
Ayleen Marquez was third at 115 pounds, winning four of five matches. Her lone loss was in the semifinals, but she bounced back to win her final two matches — including a win by fall in the third-place match.
At 120, Karely Bolanos Romero was fifth with a 3-2 record. She won the fifth-place match by fall over Emma Risser of Sunset High. At 130, Charley Beam was also fifth by winning four of six matches. She lost in the quarterfinals but won three of her next four matches — all by fall.
At 155, Xiomara Gordian Gomez won three of her four wrestled matches, including her final three. She won the consolation A championship after losing in the second round.
“We are excited to get back on the mat next weekend at the War of the Roses at Westview High School,” Lister said.
