A 6-0 start this season was tempered somewhat by a three-game losing streak this past week for the Hood River Valley girls basketball team.
But Coach Steve Noteboom’s Eagles can find solace in the fact that the competition level of their four most recent opponents likely will pay dividends later this season.
Hood River played Dec. 18-21 in the annual Tarkanian Classic basketball tournament along with schools from throughout the country. The Eagles opened the tourney with a 51-50 win over Sierra Vista, Nev., as Julia Rowan found her outside shooting touch. Hood River then lost three straight on successive days: 55-35 to Cedar Valley, Utah, on Dec. 19; 47-42 to Tikigaq School, Alaska, on Dec. 20; and 42-34 on Dec. 21 to Coral Academy, Nev.
In the Eagle win, Rowan helped her team to a 40-34 lead after three periods, by scoring 15 of her game-high 24 points in the third quarter. The scoring burst, which included three 3-pointers, enabled HRV to turn a 20-17 halftime deficit into a 40-34 lead heading into the final eight minutes.
Cedar Valley outscored Hood River 33-22 in the first half to take control of that contest. Rowan scored 12 points and Marina Castaneda added 11 for HRV.
Castaneda, the Eagles’ leading scorer this season, broke out for a 28-point effort on Dec. 20, but it wasn’t enough to lift her team to the win against Tikigaq. HRV led 28-20 at halftime, but Tikigaq tied the game after three periods and pulled away in the fourth. Rowan added 10 points for Hood River. (Tikigaq is 3,000 miles from Las Vegas, in Point Hope, on the northwest coast of Alaska.)
“We went 1-3 and we played good competition,” Noteboom said. “It was a great experience that will pay dividends in the future.”
HRV has a break until it resumes play Jan. 2 with its Northwest Oregon Conference opener versus Canby.
