HOOD RIVER — Hood River Valley’s (HRV) girls basketball team’s Feb. 19 home loss to Canby simplified — but didn’t ease — the Eagles’ state playoff aspirations.
HRV has to win its final three Northwest Oregon Conference (NWOC) games and Hillsboro needs to lose its last two contests in order for the Eagles to qualify for the 2025 Class 5A state playoffs. Three wins and Hood River may clinch the league’s fourth — of four — automatic berths to the playoffs.
Hood River (10-11 overall, 4-7 NWOC) has remaining games vs. Putnam (5-12, 4-8) on Feb. 25, at Parkrose (2-19, 2-10) on Feb. 28, and at Milwaukie (0-22, 0-12) on March 3. The Eagles will clinch with three wins, but only if Hillsboro (13-9, 7-5) loses at home to La Salle Prep (14-8, 10-1) and Canby (14-9, 8-4). If the scenario plays out, Hillsboro and HRV will be tied in league play with 7-7 records; Coach Steve Noteboom’s Eagles hold the tiebreaker over Hillsboro based on a two-game sweep of the head-to-head series.
Canby forced Hood River into a must-win situation with its seven-point win last week over the Eagles at Vannet Court. Hood River played much better this time around vs. the first meeting between the two teams — a 61-31 Canby win on Jan. 13.
Senior sharpshooter Julia Rowan was a big part of that, as she scored 16 first-half points, including four 3-pointers. Yet, Canby held a 26-24 lead at the break.
The Cougars built a 44-30 lead in the third period and settled for a 46-34 advantage heading into the fourth. Defensively, Canby didn’t allow Rowan — who finished with 27 for the game — any open looks, and thusly, no points.
That changed 13 seconds into the final quarter when Rowan swished a 3-pointer from the left wing. She added three free throws on the next possession to pull HRV within nine points, but the Eagles could get no closer than that until the final minute.
