THE DALLES — The Dalles High sophomore Kaiya Doty finished fourth in the girls 100 yard breaststroke to highlight finishes by the Riverhawks’ swimming team at the 2025 Class 4A/3A/2A/1A state meet Feb. 21-22 at the Tualatin Hills Aquatic Center in Beaverton.
Doty, who also competes in ski racing, lowered her best time in the event to 1 minute, 14.86 seconds. She swam 1:15.44 in the preliminaries, which was close to her five-second personal record she swam to win the district title in that event two weeks ago.
Doty also was eighth at state in the 200 yard individual medley in 2:30.6 — another personal best.
Doty also swam the anchor leg on the Riverhawks’ 200 yard freestyle relay, which was eighth in the preliminaries. The team of sophomore Lillen Vaught, senior Rowena Benjamin, junior Laura Black, and Doty swam the event in 1:51.48.
The Riverhawk boys were led by junior Everest Leonardson who swam to a personal-best time of 52.64 at state.
He did not qualify for finals after finishing ninth in the state meet preliminaries.
The Dalles High’s boys 200 yard freestyle relay was 10th in prelims in 1:37.7. The team consisted of sophomore Rhett Loughmiller, sophomore Maverick Varland, sophomore Sawyer Dray, and Lenardson. Those same boys finished 12th in the 200 yard medley relay in 1:53.82. The team order in that race was Loughmiller, Lenardson, Varland and Dray.
Loughmiller, who finished second at district two weeks ago in the 100 yard backstroke, swam that event and the 200 yard freestyle at state. He was 11th in the free race in 2:00.73, as well as in the backstroke in 1:04.93.
