WHITE SALMON — The Columbia High Bruins advanced to semifinals of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) Class 1A District 4 girls basketball playoffs before their season ended with a loss to the King’s Way Christian High Knights.
The Bruins (13-9) had hoped to get an upset win over the Knights (15-5) and reach the state playoffs for the first time in recent history. The Bruins played well but lost 31-24 on Feb. 22 at Centralia High School.
The Bruins had a rough start, falling behind 15-9 after the first quarter and trailed 23-12 at halftime. The Bruins came back with a strong second half, outscoring the Knights 12-8, but their comeback effort just came up a little short.
Junior post Sara Miller led the Bruins in scoring with eight points.
On Feb. 18, the Bruins won a second-round home game of the eight-team, double elimination district tournament, 49-27, over the Castle Rock High Rockets (9-13). The Bruins played outstanding defense, and they led 22-1 at the end of the first quarter. It marked the fewest points that the Bruins allowed in one quarter this season.
The Bruins built their largest lead of the game at 43-13 when jumper Halle Kock (six points) sank two free throws with 6:13 remaining in the contest.
Miller had a team-high 14 points, along with six rebounds and six steals. Mckena Carlock followed with nine points. Joella Posini had eight points, 11 rebounds and 12 steals.
