HOOD RIVER — Hood River Valley senior Judah Caudill survived a tough, three-set opening match at district and went on to advance to the 2025 OSAA Class 5A state tennis tournament.
Caudill finished fourth singles at the Northwest Oregon Conference district tourney, which concluded May 15 at Parkrose High School. The top four singles players and doubles teams qualified for the 2025 state tourney, May 23-24 in Portland and Beaverton.
Caudill won in straight sets in the second round and quarterfinals before losing in the semifinals to eventual runner-up and No. 2 seed, Brandon Wu of Centennial, 6-3, 6-1. Nolan Wong of team champion La Salle Prep beat Caudill in the third-place match, 6-3, 6-2.
Fifth seeded Carson Abel won in his first two matches in straight sets before losing to Wong in the quarters, 6-3, 6-1. Abel’s teammate Forrest Hedberg won his singles opener over Brandon Le of Parkrose, but he lost to Vu in the second round. Hood River junior Rune Baumhackl lost a close first-round match, 7-6, 7-5, but he rebounded to win twice in the consolation bracket for Coach Jon Hiatt’s HRV boys team.
Three of the four HRV teams won in the first round of doubles play but did not advance any further. The Eagle doubles team winners were: Judah Mann and Ansel Bernard; Sebastian Wellenstein and Noah Boris; and Kane Wagner and Oliver De Bruin. Asher Weld and Martin Blanchard lost in the first round.
