The Columbia High Bruins boys wrestling team competed in the WIAA Class 1A Region 2 tournament in Hoquiam and six out of their eight athletes won matches.
The tournament highlight for Columbia was by junior Sawyer Muehlbauer and senior Liam Cox, who both qualified for the state tournament Feb. 16-17 at the Tacoma Dome.
Sawyer Muehlbauer (Coach Mike Muehlbauer’s son) was undefeated as he won three matches in the 190-pound weight class to take first place. Muehlbauer won by fall over Jasper Armstrong of King’s Way Christian in the 190-pound final.
Cox won 3-of-4 matches in the 165-pound division to get third place. The top-three finishers advanced to state. Cox advanced to state for the first time ever and Muehlbauer advanced to state for a third straight year. Muehlbauer took fifth place at the 2023 state tournament.
“Liam was pretty excited about qualifying for state and I think Sawyer has a chance to win a state championship, because it’s so wide open and any one of a handful of guys has a shot at it,” said Coach Muehlbauer. “It would be great if Sawyer wins it and it would be very exciting so we’ll see what happens.
“If he does win, then he would be the first-ever state champion in Columbia High School history.”
Columbia junior Matthias Posini (285 pounds) and junior Holden Uffelman (144) both qualified as alternates after winning two matches and taking fourth place in their division. Columbia took sixth place in team scoring with 79.5 points out of 11 teams.
Columbia’s Ashley Totolhua competed in the girls regional tourney Feb. 10 in Centralia and she took fifth place in the 105-pound weight class.
