WHITE SALMON — At the midway point of the WIAA Class 1A Trico League girls basketball season, the Columbia High Bruins remain as one of the top contenders in the eight-team standings.
The Bruins (6-2 league, 9-4 overall) won two-out-of-three games last week to solidify their second-place position. Columbia is tied with the King’s Way Christian High Knights (6-2 league, 9-3 overall) for second behind Seton Catholic (8-0 league, 8-6 overall).
The Bruins won 49-45 at home Jan. 13 over the Castle Rock High Rockets (3-5 league, 6-8 overall). The Bruins built a 12-7 first quarter advantage and they led 24-14 at halftime. The Bruins, who led from start-to-finish, survived a late Rockets’ fourth-quarter rally, when they were outscored 18-11.
Junior guard Halle Koch had 17 points, six rebounds and six steals for the Bruins. Sophomore forward Joella Posini added 12 points and had a team-high seven rebounds.
The Bruins won another close contest 41-36 in a Gorge rivalry matchup Jan. 15 at Stevenson High (1-7 league, 2-11 overall). The Bruins overcame a 24-17 halftime deficit and outscored the Bulldogs 24-12 in the second half to get the win. Koch led the Bruins with 13 points and nine steals. Sara Miller had a team-high seven rebounds and 12 points.
Columbia lost to Seton Catholic on Jan. 17 in Vancouver, 47-21. The 21 points was a season-low total. Koch led Columbia in scoring with nine points.
