THE DALLES — The 15-member The Dalles High Riverhawks boys wrestling team competed in the Class 4A Special District 4 Regional Tournament Feb. 22 at La Grande where juniors Josh Brackenbury and Harley Scott qualified for this week’s state tourney.
The top four finishers in each weight class advanced to the state tourney Feb. 27 to Mar. 1 at Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum in Portland. Scott took third place in the 138-pound weight division and Brackenbury took fourth place in the 175-pound weight classification. Scott advanced to the state tournament for a second straight year and Brackenbury qualified for state for the first time.
The Riverhawks, guided by second-year Coach Barry Abrams had three sixth-place finishers in Quinn Brenner, Calvin Evans and Amado Velador. Brenner was sixth in the 165-pound division and Amado Velado took sixth at 113. Evans, a senior who was competing for the final time, took sixth in the heavyweight (285-pound) division.
Abrams said: “It was the toughest tournament that we’ve been to all year. Crook County, Pendleton and La Grande are the top three teams in our district. Those three teams are also ranked among the top five in the state in Class 4A.”
Other Riverhawk wrestlers who placed were sophomore Taven Velador, who was eighth at 132 pounds, and Jesiah Salazar, eighth in the 150-pound classification. The Riverhawks took sixth place in team scoring out of the seven-team event.
