Yoon Carlson
Yoon Carlson, a seventh grade student at Wildwood Academy, was recently honored with an award for a flash fiction piece she wrote and submitted to the 2020 Scholastic Art and Writing competition.
Her story, called Fruit Loops, tells of two high school students who embark on a road trip and begin to realize they have feelings for each other.
“It has a fun and playful tone that takes a dark turn when the driver stops paying enough attention to the road,” said Wildwood teacher Claire Gilchrist.
The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards have been operating since 1923, and have recognized writers such as Stephen King and Joyce Carol Oates. This year, more than 340,000 works of art and writing were submitted across the United States. Carlson was recognized by in the local “West Region at Large’,” which comprises all states from the Pacific Ocean to Colorado.
She was awarded one of about 20 Silver Keys, which go to “stand-out works submitted to local programs that demonstrate exceptional ability.”
