Thursday, Dec. 13 was the first real wintry day in Hood River this year. Following a spell of weather as fine as ever California has been able to boast in early December, an East wind set in late Wednesday night and by 9 a.m. on Thursday the entire valley was enduring a heavy snowstorm, with temperatures just below freezing point. Owing to the ground being frozen, the snow quickly formed a layer and by noon, the Mid-Columbia was under its first winter coat.

Among the things that aren’t always what they seem to be are the grade marks that appear on many students’ report cards.
In numerous instances the grades have been changed for the better, not on the official records of the school but just on the cards that Mom and Dad see.
The case involving theft, sale and forgery of cards at both junior and senior high schools came to light Thursday night at the District 12 school board meeting.

This was the result of a wreck on Dec. 7, Saturday, about 12:50 when a car was crowded off the highway a quarter mile west of Dock Road on 830. (See photo above right.) The ’54 Buick was totaled, reported the state patrol. The car was westbound on 8, rounding a corner to the right and the driver observed an east bound vehicle partially in her lane of traffic. She went to the right and into a ditch, hit about five rocks, traveled in the ditch about 140 feet, then went broadside across the highway for 71 feet, went through the guard rail and down the bank, coming to a rest with the front of the car against the base of an oak tree, the rear of the car against a branch of the tree. The car was 23 feet from the edge of the road in a vertical position. The driver suffered minor cuts and bruises and shock. She was treated and then released from Skyline Hospital.

The Columbia Art Gallery has settled into its new space at 101 Fourth St., and it’s as inviting — or more so — than its former digs on Second Street. The artwork on exhibit is a bit more crowded in the smaller space, but the high-ceilinged, well-lit gallery shows it off better. The gallery hardly skipped a beat when it moved from its longtime home at 207 Second St. earlier this fall after losing its lease.
