Would three boys who were camping at a lake walk away and leave all of their gear strewn behind, without any intention of returning?
Klickitat County and Washington State authorities thought otherwise, so they launched a search Friday afternoon at Spearfish Lake, one of the popular backwater lakes east of The Dalles Dam.
The search that included dragging of the lake with grappling hooks, in the belief the youngsters had drowned, ended abruptly when a fisherman from The Dalles said he had seen the boys changing their clothes on the bank and they had then walked around the shore and away from the west side of the lake.
The news came in mid-evening, with dusk approaching, just as scuba diver Don A. Martin of The Dalles was about to enter the water.
