Bookends Beatriz Cortez and Cesar Robles received Henkle Middle School student of the week honors for the period ending Sept. 11, while Rylee Kona (center left) and Barrett Ihde collected the award for the week ending Sept. 4. Beatriz, 11, is a sixth-grader who enjoys drawing in her spare time. She plays soccer for the Black Thunder, and says Math is her favorite subject. Beatriz, who wants to be a nurse when she grows up, is the daughter of Guadalupe and Jose Cortez, BZ Corner. Cesar, 13, is a seventh-grader who is musically inclined; he plays the trumpet, bass, and electric guitar “because I’m musical. Music is life.” He is involved at school in band, choir, and jazz band, and plans to compete in Knowledge Bowl. His favorite subject is Algebra I. Cesar, the son of Lucia Nunez and Ramon Robles, Bingen, wants to be a musician or politician when he grows up. Rylee, 11, is a fifth-grader who enjoys hanging out with her family and playing sports, particularly softball and basketball. Her favorite subject is P.E. Rylee, who wants to be a professional softball player, is the daughter of Beth and Jason Kona, White Salmon. Barrett, 12, is a seventh-grader whose pastimes include hanging out with friends and reading. She is a member of the school band and jazz band, plays soccer and basketball, and enjoys downhill and cross-country skiing. She also plans to be involved in such school extracurricular activities as Mathletes and Knowledge Bowl. Her favorite subject is Science. Barrett, who aspires to be a biologist, is the daughter of Sydney and Eric Ihde, White Salmon.
