THE DALLES — Serious Theater will present Joseph Kesselring’s comedy “Arsenic and Old Lace” on May 17 and 18 at 7 p.m., and May 19 at 2 p.m., admission by donation, at the Zion Lutheran Church ELCA, 10th and Union streets.
This fully-staged and costumed performance will be the first traditionally-produced play that Serious Theater presents. Director Sue Matney has adapted the staging to suit the black box Sawyer Hall Theater.
“Arsenic and Old Lace” is a classic black comedy in which drama critic Mortimer has just gotten engaged to his beloved Elaine. As events unfold, he discovers that his two aunts Abby and Martha have a penchant for poison wine, his favorite brother still thinks that he is Teddy Roosevelt, and his evil brother Jonathan has returned home after having plastic surgery to hide from the police with his cohort Dr. Herman Einstein. The question is, which is more deadly: poison or family?
