Students at Chenowith Elementary School will soon be enjoying a “sound lab” with music-writing software and other perks paid for by their own fundraising efforts.
Music teacher Corin Parker said she is pleased by the amount of money the students were able to raise through their “Run for the Arts” events.
“We went well over our goal and the kids loved it!” she said in an email.
Parker said the 15 local businesses that sponsored the fundraiser deserve thanks for their efforts. The students also got individuals to pledge money per lap the student ran or walked on the day of the event.
About 400 students participated.
Some of the students also raised money at a related event in which they performed at Burgerville in exchange for some of the night’s profits going toward the sound lab.
Parker said most students completed between eight and 14 laps around the field and some of the students received prizes for being top runners or top earners.
Richard Eddy’s class earned a pizza party for raising $600 — the most of any class. Overall the fundraiser netted about $3,800. The goal was $3,500.
Before the fundraiser Parker said she was raising money for the sound lab because she wants her students to be able to hear the music they are writing even if they can’t play an instrument, and she also wants them to understand how modern music is often created.
“I can teach them the trumpet or clarinet but music is technical now,” she said.
