Each year, students at Parkdale Elementary are challenged by Principal Gus Hedberg to sell a certain number of raffle tickets for the annual school carnival, thus earning a “grand prize.” This year’s goal was 3,000 tickets — and if they reached it, Hedberg promised to sleep on the school’s roof in pajamas of the students’ choice. Students doubled their goal — 6,000 tickets were sold — so on March 23, Hedberg ventured up on the roof after school, sporting footed pajamas to loud cheers. He survived the night of steady rain in his tent, and was awoken the next morning by the top two student sellers, with help from Parkdale Fire’s Mike McCafferty, who sounded multiple horns and alarms on the fire truck.
