Marble leads sophomore sweep in Poetry Out Loud

Marble performed “Cartoon Physics part 1,” by Nick Flynn, and “Degrees of Grey in Philipsburg,” by Richard Hugo.

Marble advances to the State Poetry Out Loud event on March 8 in Beaverton and at Powell’s Books in Portland.

Advisor Gabe Judah, a Hood River Valley High School English teacher, said the sophomore sweep was unusual.

“We had more underclassmen competitors this year, and the quality of performances has gone up quite a bit in the past few years,” Judah said. “The neat thing is, though, that this is a competition in which everybody has a chance to take the top prize. The younger students are enthusiastic reciters.”

Rand performed two e.e. cummings poems: “I Carry Your Heart with Me” and “In Just.”

Hart performed “The Paradox,” by Paul Lawrence Dunbar, and “The Death of Allegory,” by Billy Collins.
