Michael Houser, Terray Harmon, Gary Conley and Mike Kilkenny contributed to this report.

Last week’s History Mystery, above, was scanned from a 4- by 5-inch black and white negative from the archives of The Dalles Chronicle. It was one of a collection of negatives titled “Mid-State Construction Co.” and dated September, 1949.

A dozen construction projects were pictured, including the one above titled “West Park.” It is an aerial photograph.

Michael Houser said the homes were part of the Blakely Way and Drive neighborhood, built in 1948 at 10th and Webber.

Gary Conley recognized the West Park project, between W. 10th and 13th streets. “It looks like there’s the old county hospital or ‘poor farm,’ they called it, where Columbia Basin Care is now,” he said. “It’s sure changed out through there now, except for the hill there.”

Mike Kilkenny said the road coming in at the bottom right is Webber Street, it goes up and intersects W. 10th. The empty area in foreground is where One Community Health and the Mid-Columbia Fire and Rescue station is today. Off to the right would be the old bus barn and county shops. To the left is where the catholic church is.

On enlargement, grave stones at the east end of the church cemetery are visible on the left side of the photograph.
