Mike Taylor of La Pine, Dale Roberts of Maupin, Gary Conley and Rich S. Barnham contributed to this report.

Last week’s History Mystery, above, was scanned from a 35mm black and white negative from the archives of The Dalles Chronicle. It was taken Jan. 17, 1957, and is labeled “Petroglyphs with Dave Cole.”

Mike Taylor of La Pine wrote, “Love the photo of the crew removing (salvaging) the petroglyphs. I’ve worked on rock art archaeological projects in the Columbia Gorge for over 20 years and am quite familiar with these particular artifacts, many of which are now protected at Columbia Hills State Park. The boulders were removed from their original locations before the new pool behind the dam submerged them. I believe the men are with the Corps of Engineers (not sure about that.)”

The petroglyphs were located on the Washington side of the Columbia River.
