On Tuesday, Aug. 12, River City welcomes four bands of the punk, garage-rock and surf-rock variety to the stage. The show will feature Rotties, “Portland’s burlier sort of garage rock band, with a slash and burn party-punk sound,” Needles and Pizza — Portland’s “swirling in-your-face groove garage rock duo,” the Slutty Hearts — specializing in garage-pop and pretty murder songs, and Skookoom, Hood River’s newest surf-punk band. 9 p.m. showtime, 21 and over only. Amber Charms returns Sept. 6
On Saturday, Sept. 6, Scarlet Thistle Studio presents Amber Charms at the Columbia Center for the Arts in Hood River at 7:30 p.m. Showcasing a selection of award-winning performers and internationally acclaimed artists from the Pacific Northwest, and beyond, Amber Charms displays traditional and contemporary interpretations of the ancient art form known as belly dance. Featuring the area’s most exciting and innovative dancers, Amber Charms presents improvisational American Tribal Style, classic Oriental Dance, and Belly Dance Fusion.

Sam Baker in concert Aug. 24
The Columbia Gorge Orchestra Association is proud to present the singer/songwriter Sam Baker on Sunday, August 24 at 7:30 p.m. at the Columbia Center for the Arts.
Sam recently appeared with Terry Gross on NPR’s “Fresh Air,” and Rolling Stone magazine named his latest CD, “Say Grace,” as one of their top 10 country albums of 2013.
Sam’s story is unique and inspiring. In 1986, Baker was traveling by train in Peru when a bomb placed on a luggage rack above his head by the Shining Path guerrilla group exploded, killing seven other passengers including the three people who had been sitting with him. His injuries required 17 reconstructive surgeries. He did retain enough dexterity to grasp a guitar pick and over time, re-taught himself to play his guitar left-handed, relearned speech, and began to write an entirely new, personal, and authentic type of song.

‘Underground’ musical swap meet at skatepark Aug. 10
On Sunday, Aug 10, starting at noon, the Hood River Skate Park will feature a musical instrument swap meet hosted by the Underground Music Station. Bring your music gear to sell or trade, get a free music lesson and jam with a live band featuring Underground Music Station instructors. Organizer Tim Snyder will be on hand answering questions about the Station’s Kickstarter campaign. Pro skateboard demonstrations are planned, too. Hood River Skatepark, Wasco and 20th, Hood River.
