Furry friends will be the subject of the Columbia Art Center’s Gallery Exhibition in February. “It’s Raining Cats and Dogs” will feature 11 artists’ interpretation of cats and dogs and how they affect our everyday lives. The show will include works in both two- and three-dimensional art by local artists, and from artists in Portland and Idaho.
“Be prepared to smile when you walk in the door,” said Judie Hanel, co-curator of the show. “This is a show that will delight everyone that has a dog or cat in their life.”
The show’s opening reception will be on First Friday, Feb. 5, from 6-8 p.m. Those visiting the Center during the show are welcome to bring in a photo of their dog or cat to post on a lobby board. The best photo will be awarded a special prize at the end of the month. Visitors are also invited to bring cat and dog food to the Center that will be fiven to Columbia Gorge Cat Rescue and Adopt-a-Dog.
As part of the exhibition, the Columbia Art Center will be partnering with Arts in Education of the Gorge to work with Hood River Middle School students to create paintings of cats and dogs for display in the Center’s Lobby Gallery. In addition, kids and adults are invited to color on the big cat and dog mural in the Gallery Nook.
“Dogs and cats have been featured in art for thousands of years,” said co-curator Dawn Elle. “There are dog people and cat people, and this show will feature something for everyone.”
