Sherman and Dufur will play in the 4 p.m. Big Sky District boys basketball championship game Saturday at The Dalles High School.
Sherman advanced to the Feb. 17 game with a 57-35 win over the visiting Wheeler County High Rattlers in a district semifinal matchup Thursday in Moro. The Big Sky East Division No. 1-seeded Huskies (23-1 overall) will face the Big Sky West Division No. 1-seeded Dufur High Rangers (20-2 overall), who edged visiting Condon 51-49 Thursday.
Sherman was led in scoring by junior Jamie Phelps with 24 points and junior Gabe Fritts with 17.
Coach Max Martin said: “It was a great win; the boys played really well, and I have to give them a lot of credit because they really worked their tails off and they made it look easy.
“Saturday is a big game with Dufur, they beat us once, they’re a tough team and we’re going to have to show up and play very well.”
It marks the second straight year that the Huskies advanced to the 32-team Class 1A state playoffs; they’ll play a first-round game Feb. 20.
Dufur holds off Condon
The Rangers, led by senior guard Cody Phillips (21 points), built a 25-14 halftime advantage but had to hold off a comeback effort by the Blue Devils (14-8 overall). Dufur junior Jacob Kent scored nine of his 11 points in the fourth quarter.
The Big Sky West Division No. 1-seeded Rangers, guided by longtime (30-years) Coach Hollie Darden, will face Sherman in a rematch of an earlier regular season contest between the two squads. Dufur won 42-41 in overtime over the Huskies on Feb. 7 at Dufur. The Rangers were without Phillips in that contest as he was unable play because of a sprained ankle.
“Condon came out and hit some shots to close the gap and then it was just kind of a back-and-forth game after that,” Darden said. “Sherman is playing well, so we’ll have to show up in that game as a team and play good defense and I think it will be another good game.”
The No. 5-ranked Rangers qualified for the 32-team Class 1A state playoffs for the first time since 2020 and they’ll play a first round contest Feb. 20. The winner of Saturday’s Dufur/Sherman matchup will host a first round home state playoff game.
