Heather Howard photoHOOD RIVER — Soroptimist International of Hood River has given $1,500 Live Your Dream awards to two local single mothers, Julie Sheleny and Jamie Veirs, who are going back to school to achieve their dreams.
Sheleny, who has an 18-year-old daughter and a 10-year-old son, is pursuing an associate degree at Portland Community College and has the goal of becoming a paralegal. She has an interest in working in the juvenile dependency court system.
Veirs, who has a 1-year-old daughter, is enrolled in the Aviation Maintenance Technology program at Columbia Gorge Community College. She is interested in working with helicopters or specializing in sheet metal fabrication.
Soroptimist International is dedicated to investing in the dreams of women like Sheleny and Veirs. The local Hood River chapter fundraises with the sole objective being to award these grants.
