Special Olympics fall sports are well under way in Hood River with swimming on Thursdays 6-7 p.m. and Sundays 4-5 p.m., and a regional competition on Nov. 5 in Beaverton. Thank you, Head Coach Chris Donnermeyer.
We also have bowling happening on Tuesdays 4 to 5:30 p.m.; thank you head coach Tiffany Pruit. Regionals are coming up quickly on Oct. 24. This year, unfortunately due to financial restraints, the Oregon Special Olympics bowling athletes will not be able to travel to a different bowling alley and meet other athletes in our league for the regional competition. Instead our athletes will be bowling “in house” at Orchard Lanes in Hood River and after Regionals their scores will be sent in to Special Olympics Oregon Headquarters and matched with similarly skilled athletes in our league. In November, they will receive medals or ribbons based on these results, which will be awarded here locally at an awards ceremony. Because of all this, they will miss out on the camaraderie and excitement that goes with sports competitions.
You are officially invited to come support and encourage your local bowling athletes at their regional competition — this year that day is Oct. 24, 4-5:30 p.m., at Orchard Lanes, 1141 Tucker Road in Hood River. Please come encourage your Special Olympic athletes to be their very best.
Special Olympics is always looking for volunteers. Next up is winter snow sports and basketball. On the horizon we would like to add a golfing opportunity.
