HOOD RIVER — Due to the Excessive Heat Warning issued by the National Weather Service for many parts of Oregon including Hood River County, the First Friday Art Walk event scheduled for July 5 has been canceled. The Excessive Heat Warning is in effect from Thursday at noon until 11 p.m. Sunday, with “dangerously hot conditions with temperatures 100 to 105 expected.” The decision prioritizes the safety and well-being of residents and visitors, who are reminded to exercise caution during the anticipated heat wave.
“We regret to cancel this beloved community event, but the health and safety of our vendors, staff, volunteers, and the community comes first,” said Katie Kadlub, CEO of Visit Hood River. “We look forward to resuming First Friday on August 2 for the Hot August Nights classic cars event, and we encourage everyone to stay cool and hydrated during this period of extreme heat.”
First Friday Art Walks have become a cherished tradition in Hood River, bringing together local artists, businesses, and residents for an evening of creativity and community. The July event's cancellation was not a decision made lightly, but with temperatures expected to rise significantly, the safety of participants and attendees took precedent.
The National Weather Services offers the following precautionary preparedness actions for the Excessive Heat Warning:
Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sunshine, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
Those seeking relief from the heat in area rivers and lakes should take water safety precautions. Wear a life jacket and don`t venture into the water alone.
To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.
