Have you noticed the activity at the old Starr property? The US Forest Service has started construction on the day use park. The new name for this park will be "Balfour-Klickitat River." Don't know how long the construction will take. This will be a day use site with trails in and around the area. In case you don't know the history of this site, we will soon put that in our history section.
Also a new development in Lyle, the access road to the point on the west end of town (near Greg Colt's office) has been closed to traffic.
Shirley Jasperson is still recovering from her fall. She is spending a few days in Columbia Basin Nursing Home in The Dalles, getting some physical therapy and regaining strength to return home to Lyle.
The County Roads Department will hold a public meeting Sept. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Lyle Lions Community Center. It will hear from the public any comments for or against the 6-year county road improvement plans. This program covers 2004-2009. Here is the opportunity to voice your concerns.
Barbara had an e-mail several days ago from someone needing information on the old Lyle Water Co. With a little digging she unearthed the wonderful files her mother kept when she and Marshall were president and secretary of the association. This just supports the justification for a Lyle Historical Museum. The council has set a committee to begin working on this project. Are you interested? We need your help, input, and ideas! If something isn't done soon we could continue losing historical records, pictures, maps, etc. Let's get the community behind this project and honor our settlers.
Community churches are Lyle United Methodist, 403 W Klickitat St., and Lyle Celebration Center, 715 Washington St. There will be special music on Sept. 7 at the Lyle Methodist Church. The Samoan youth group, from The Dalles, will sing. Anyone interested in hearing this great group is welcome to attend.
Lyle history, taken from the Ruralite January 1980 -- "Still Having Fun!" Story by M.V. Frank Morgan.
"Blair sits himself down, vigorously pumps his legs up and down, and laughing comments as his fingers pick out the melody, "This old song is called 'Brighten up with happiness.'"
"The jolly tune and the title sum it all up for the Shippeys. Their lives have been brightened with the happiness of hard work well done for a lot of years-and they are looking forward to many years of square-dancing still ahead of them."
