Tucker Road retains an oaky aroma, with more than a hint of neighborliness, after an unfortunate wine incident Tuesday.
A truck laden with cases from Hood Crest Winery spilled part of its load near Guignard Road in the 4:45 p.m. non-injury incident. A total of 39 cases of Tesscan red wine hit the ground, creating a glassy, yet aromatic mess all over the road.
Westside Fire Department responded as did plenty of neighbors, reports Tess Barr, whose name is played into the wine in question. The musician/designer/vintner owns Hood Crest with her husband, Patrik. Their Orchard Road facility is in the end-stages of expansion, meaning they are gradually trucking their cases of wine from storage facilities back to home base.
Barr said the truck apparently swerved to avoid another vehicle, and down went the cases. The Barrs were able to repackage and salvage most of what fell, but they lost 10 cases of wine.
She said folks from Mikey’s Muffler, Hood River Coffee Co. and others came out with brooms, shovels and trashcans to clean up the mess.
“The department was fabulous, and anyone else who helped, and they got it all cleaned up with as low impact as possible,” Barr said.
“It could have been worse. We are not worried about what happened, it was great that for all the bottles of wine and boxes that were damaged that no one was hurt,” she said.
“And it didn’t involve any other vehicle and it was at a crowded time and the kindness of the merchants who came to help. And traffic was kind, too. People slowed down and were patient about getting around it.
“We have an amazing community. It’s always so helpful,” she said
“And we have a motto at Hood Crest: never cry over spilled wine.”
