Washington Reading Corps, a National Service program of Educational Service District 112, is recruiting 29 full-time and many part-time volunteers to serve with 12 partner schools located in communities throughout SW Washington including White Salmon, Klickitat, and Wishram elementary schools.
Washington Reading Corps (WRC) is a state-wide initiative that helps K-6 students improve their reading abilities. This is achieved through research-based tutoring of struggling readers and effective collaborations among schools, families, community members, National Service, businesses and state partners.
Since 1998 WRC has partnered with more than 200 under-performing schools statewide to address literacy issues by providing academic and other support to 20,000 students each year.
Educational Service District 112 (ESD 112) has received WRC grants since 1998. Last year, 24 WRC AmeriCorps and VISTA members provided more than 38,000 hours of service to 1,100 students at nine partner schools.
ESD 112's Washington Reading Corps program anticipates serving even more local students in the 2005-06 school year since their grant for the coming year will expand their program from nine to 12 schools and from 24 to 29 AmeriCorps and VISTA volunteers.
WRC volunteers provide direct, hands-on support to students and schools by tutoring children one-on-one and in small groups, coordinating literacy events, and increasing community involvement in local schools.
Though WRC members are considered volunteers they receive the following benefits while serving with WRC: a $785 to $850 monthly living stipend, basic medical insurance, loan forbearance, childcare allowance, on-going training opportunities, and an education scholarship of $4,725 or post service award of $2,000.

WRC also seeks part-time reading tutors to provide reading assistance to students for as little as an hour per week. Reading tutors provide reading support to students on a one-on-one basis or in small groups. Educational scholarships of $1,000 to $1,800 may be available for reading tutors who are interested and qualify.
