With the start of the new year, this newspaper's letters policy has been updated:
Concise letters are not only better read, they are more likely to be published in a timely manner because of space limitations. Almost any point can be made in 350 words or fewer, so this is set as an upper level for length.
Please note: effective with our Jan. 7 edition, the 350-word limit will be strictly enforced, and "Another Voice" submissions must be discussed with the editor, in advance.
Unsigned letters, letters signed with fictitious signatures, and copies of letters sent to public officials are not automatically accepted. Letters can contain excerpts of letters or articles published elsewhere, but must be substantially comprised of original comment. Also, authorship must be under the name of the person as they are known to the community.
Also, as previously stated, we reserve the right to limit letters on a subject when we feel it has been thoroughly aired to the point of letters becoming repetitive.
Letters that are libelous, in bad taste or personal attacks on individuals or private businesses will not be printed. Letters as printed will include name and town of residence; however, writers must include address and daytime telephone numbers. These are for identification purposes only, and will not be published.
Also note that letters of thanks are, in most cases, published as part of the Neighbors section of the paper, which appears regularly. Our Readers Write and Neighbors jointly provide a forum for readers to comment on important matters to the community.
