The winds of change were blowing Mark Doyle's way last week as the White Salmon resident took top honors in the men's division of the 2002 Ford Gorge Games Kiteboarding competition on the Columbia River.
Doyle, who placed second at last year's games, beat out a truly international field that included 2001 World Champion Martin Vari of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
This year's men's Blowout champion, Chris Gilbert of Pukalani, Hawaii, in an attempt at a Gorge Games double, finished in a seven-way tie for ninth place
The men's event began with a 32-person expression session that ended up with the top 16 kiters advancing into a field of 32 to face the top 16 pre-seeded kiters.
The top two competitors from each heat advanced to the next round in a single-elimination format.
The women's single elimination format saw first-time Ford Gorge Games competitor and New Zealand native Cindy Mosey capture first place, with two-time Ford Gorge Games Blowout champion Renee Hanks of Arcata, Calif., taking second.
Last year's winner, Sheldon Plentovich, and three other kiters tied for fifth place.
The world's top kiteboarders flew into the Gorge for the 2002 games to compete for a record prize purse of $20,000.
