Sometime this summer, the Washington Department of Transportation plans to install a three-way traffic signal at the intersection of State Route 14 and the Hood River Toll Bridge.
When the project is completed, it will be the only operational tri-color traffic signal in Klickitat County.
The signal system, which will be controlled by vehicle sensors in the pavement rather than by a timer, will alleviate congestion experienced by vehicles coming from Oregon into Washington on the bridge by allowing traffic enough time to make turns onto State Route 14 without having to wait for east-west traffic to pass.
The signal also will make left turns from State Route 14 westbound onto the bridge approach easier and safer.
The installation project will be advertised for competitive bid starting on March 29, with construction likely to begin around June. The light should be operational by September or October.
During the first week of operation, WDOT will post advance warning signs in all three directions to make sure motorists are aware of the signal ahead of them.
There will be limited traffic impacts at the intersection during construction, with most work occurring on the shoulders, and the signal installation project will not impact the bridge deck replacement project now under way.
