Native American Ambassador and storyteller Harvest Moon will present a living history performance entitled "Mary Sam: Basket Weaver, Visionary, Provider & Survivor" in the White Salmon Valley Community Library's Sprint/Baker Gallery on Friday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m. The Friends of the Library will provide refreshments.
Mary Sam (1830-1923) was born into the Klickitat Tribe. She was captured during a skirmish between the Klickitat and the Suquamish, and was raised in the Suquamish traditions. Eventually she ended up at Port Madison on Bainbridge Island. Sam's stories are as colorful as her baskets, and bring an understanding of her growth and acculturation.
Harvest Moon, in preparing to portray Mary Sam, immersed herself in the writing, life and time of her historical character. During her performance she encourages a lively exchange with the audience and uses hands-on artifacts to capture the true character of Mary Sam.
Harvest Moon speaks from her heart and spirit, leaving her audiences with a new understanding of the Northwest Coast Native Americans.
Harvest Moon is a Quinault ambassador, historian, basket weaver and storyteller. Her combined talents and many skills help her create educational lectures for people of all ages.
She has served two terms for The Washington Commission for the Humanities and received the "Peace and Friendship Award" from the Washington State Historical Society in recognition of significant contributions to the understanding of Northwest Indian Heritage.
