After examining hundreds of recipes from across the United States, Steinfeld's Products has announced this year's winners, including a White Salmon woman, of its annual sauerkraut recipe contest.
Entries were accepted in five categories: appetizers, soups, entrees, breads and desserts. Each included Steinfeld's sauerkraut, winekraut or red cabbage as an ingredient.
For the second year in a row, Chef Lou Aaron of Boise, Idaho won the $500 first prize in the professional chef category. His recipe for "Beef and Red Cabbage Rolls with Curry Sauce" may be served as an appetizer or entre.
Dianne Smith of The Dalles, Ore., won the $500 first prize in the non-professional category for her recipe for "Sauerkraut Crusts."
"Colorful Cabbage Chicken Salad," a refreshing entre entered by Margee Berry of White Salmon won second prize. She will receive $250 for her efforts.
In addition to their prize money, each creative cook will also receive a year's supply of their choice of Steinfeld's sauerkraut, winekraut or red cabbage.
Judges Ginger Johnston, Oregonian FoodDay editor; Don Fuller food columnist for the Longview Daily News; Carol Thomas, Northwest Hospitality News writer and Judi Harper, Steinfeld's Products' representative, evaluated entries on originality, presentation, ease of preparation and appetite appeal.
