Fishing:
The annual John Thomas Memorial Jewett Creek Kids Fishing Derby is set for this Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Jewett Creek Park Grounds in White Salmon.
The event is open to anglers 12 years of age and under. All they need to do is show up and sign in.
No license is required and tackle will be provided by the White Salmon River Steelheaders, who are sponsoring the event in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Open waters, stocked with rainbow trout, will run one quarter mile upstream and downstream of the clubhouse. The catch limit is two trout per angler.
Softball:
Three White Salmon players helped the Hood River Hot Shots win the Buzz Tautfest Husky Classic, an ASA 14-and-under tournament held June 5 in Aurora, Ore.
Erin Jones led all Hot Shot hitters with a .667 batting average in the team's four victories. She scored nine runs and homered once.
Michelle McMillen posted a .400 average overall and scored seven times. Jessica batted .333; one of her hits was a double.
The Hots Shots defeated the North Marion Huskies, 20-2; the Clackamas Lobos, 11-3; the Gresham Eliminators, 6-5; and the Lobos, 12-6, in games played at North Marion High School.
Track and Field:
Columbia High coach Doug Miller announced Matt Lovrin and Abby Zuck will be team captains for the 2005 season during a June 7 awards dessert banquet in the CHS library.
Miller also presented "most inspirational" awards to Lovrin, a junior, and senior Jeni Stembridge. "Most improved" honors went to junior Levi Miller and senior Meghan McCutcheon.
Senior Kaitlin Mansfield received her fourth varsity letter.
Third-year letters went to Lovrin, McCutcheon, Stembridge, Abby Zuck, Anna Zuck and seniors Chris Davis, Alexa Williams and Sylvia Kreiter.
Second-year letter-winners included seniors Krista Bakke and Zach Tindall, junior Will Brasuell and sophomores Andrew Culp and Alycia Rohwer.
Miller, sophomore Nolan Kenoyer and freshman Britta Knutson earned first-year letters.
Seniors Sean Farrell and Nick Ellson, and freshman Eloise Zimbelman received junior varsity awards.
Windsurfing:
Washington State Parks and the Columbia Gorge Windsurfing Association (CGWA) have scheduled a 9 a.m. to noon work party for Saturday, June 19, at Doug's Beach.
Work will consist of removing driftwood from the beach and picking up trash and other debris. Volunteers are asked to bring the appropriate tools.

Correction:
The page 6 story, "State title streak ends at six for CHS girls," it was incorrectly reported that Columbia High's Corrine Blankenship tied a state record in the dead lift.
What really happened was: Blankenship attempted to tie the state record of 345 pounds after completing a lift of 315 pounds.
