Prep Gymnastics:
Jessica Strain of White Salmon finished eighth in the all-around competition last Saturday during the SW Washington sub-district meet at Naydenov gym in Vancouver. Her final point total was 32.95.
Six teams from the region took part in the Class 3A meet in preparation for this Friday's district meet.
Stevenson, for which Strain competed, placed second in the team competition, losing the title to Columbia River, 153.95 to 166.0. Camas, Washougal, Fort Vancouver and Kelso also were represented.
Strain's best finish of the day was sixth on the uneven bars, on which she scored a 7.0. She took ninth on the balance beam (8.3), seventh in the floor exercise (8.9) and seventh on the vault, setting a personal record of 8.75 in the process.
Prep Boys Soccer:
Columbia High coach Peter Knowles is hosting a meeting this Thursday for athletes who plan to play soccer this spring.
The meeting will be held in Knowles' classroom during CHS's regular lunch break.
Prep Wrestling:
Castle Rock won the Trico Division wrestling championship last Saturday in La Center, amassing 385.5 points for an 82.5 victory over runner-up Ridgefield.
The Rockets won four weight classes and qualified 19 wrestlers for this Saturday's regional tournament in their home gym.
Ridgefield picked up 15 of the 56 available regional berths (top four in 14 weights advanced) and 10 went to La Center wrestlers.
Stevenson placed fourth in the team competition with 120.5 points. The Bulldogs had two weight-class champions: J.D. Goodrich at 125 pounds and Cory Creighton at 171. They were among five Stevenson grapplers to earn regional mat time.
Columbia High of White Salmon finished last in the team standings, with 10 points. The Bruins failed to advance a wrestler to regionals for the second year in a row.
Winter sports:
A weekend storm that dropped more than a foot-and-a-half of powder snow in three days revived conditions at Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Resort.
The resort went into last weekend prepared to operate four lifts but quickly opened two additional high-speed quads, thanks to the storm that wouldn't stop.
Dave Riley, MHM's vice president and general manager, described the snow as "more than what was expected but just what we needed."
Ample snowfall enabled Meadows to operate four of its five high-speed chairlifts and provide access to the terrain served by the Shooting Star, Cascade and Vista Express quads.
"This is exactly what skiers and snowboarders have been waiting for," Riley said of the early-February blast.
The snow also foritified base area conditions, which the resort had been supplementing with machine-made snow.
As of Monday, Meadows had a three-foot snow depth in the base area and five feet or more higher up on the mountain.
Meadows resumes night operations this week with lifts operating from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, 9 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday and Friday, and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday.
